History

The Practice’s history stretches back over one hundred and sixty years in its former location in the nearby village of Ash. The father of one of the current partners joined the Practice in the fifties. Major Galley was the senior vet. He retired and Pat Smalley was joined by Denis Blaxland. Hence Smalley and Blaxland came into existence.

This was a country Practice serving the farms and smallholdings in the local villages. The bias was towards equine and large animal work with a few small animal consults and procedures, then carried out in the partners private houses. A small, purpose built, veterinary facility was built and the Practice grew rapidly with three and soon four vets, servicing a growing clientele with increasing demand for good quality small animal care.

In March 1992 the Practice was moved to a purpose designed Veterinary Centre in the shadow of the White Windmill Heritage Museum on the outskirts of Sandwich.

Recent History

The White Mill Veterinary Centre, formerly Smalley & Blaxland, was opened over 160 years ago in Ash and has been continually providing care to animals in East Kent. The new surgery premises were opened on the 4th March 1992. There were four partners. The Practice premises are well designed with a large car park for 18 cars and a spacious reception area and waiting room, including a children’s corner to keep the little ones occupied. We have disabled access to the Practice, consulting rooms and the public toilet, via the front door.

White Mill is one of only a few genuinely mixed practices in East Kent. Having 7 vets, with expertise in a large range of species and disciplines, we can accommodate clients from all the towns and villages of East Kent.

The Practice is R.C.V.S accredited at Tier 2 small animal Practice standard – the highest GP standard. We are also a nurse training practice, employing 4 Registered Veterinary Nurses and 1 Animal Nursing Assistant. They provide support to our Veterinary Surgeons and excellent quality care to our patients.

All the vets and staff are committed to providing the best of care for our animal patients. We are proud to serve clients from Sandwich and all the towns and villages of East Kent, and a new branch surgery was opened in the summer of 2006 in Aylesham. The Practice has been built on good quality professional care and personal recommendation; it tries to promote a friendly, caring professional service and takes seriously its role in animal welfare.

We encourage the continued professional development of our veterinary staff and this ensures that we are always up to date with new ideas and techniques. The Practice is still one of the few fully mixed practices in this area, with expertise in Equine, Large Animal, Small Animal and most exotic species.

All wild-life animals are treated free of charge.
